A Day of Service

This year is Reeves-Reed Arboretum’s 50th Anniversary, and our first event in our year-long celebration of this milestone was a great success!

For 26 years, Shaping Summit Together, a 501c3 organization, has celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr by creating a town-wide Day of Service. “Make it a day on! Not a day off!” is their motto for the holiday.

Reeves-Reed Arboretum has been a participant in this event for many years. We invite community members to come in and create Valentine’s Day cards that could brighten the day of someone in need. This year, the cards will be delivered to our friends at SAGE Eldercare in Summit.

SAGE Eldercare is a not-for-profit organization that has been part of our community for 68 years. Their mission is to help older adults continue to live in their own homes. They provide a full range of eldercare services under one roof; help with food insecurity; offer a stimulating adult day medical program; and provide referrals, caregiver support groups, and free and confidential Medicare counseling.

More than 70 people of all ages participated in our service project. Available for card-making were saved arts and crafts materials from our classes and programs that could be “upcycled” to create original works of art.

Families, students from Kindergarten through High School, parents and grandparents, even toddlers and babies stopped by our classroom to create Valentines to make a stranger smile. The City of Summit’s Mayor Fagan also shared her time with us and created cards along with everyone!

Thanks to everyone’s dedicated service, we were able to deliver 130 cards to SAGE Eldercare to Celebrate Valentine’s Day!

It was a truly wonderful event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King’s example of service and kindness. Thank you again to our community for coming out for this important day!

You can continue to celebrate 50 years of RRA by joining us for other upcoming special events this year, or stop by the main office to purchase 50th Anniversary merch and join our year-long 50/50 raffle!
